from Steve Album sale 45, lot 887

This specimen was lot 887 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AV mohur, Burhanpur, AH1040 year 3, mint barely visible, but the only mint for year 3 with this type (4-panel legend with mint at the bottom, year 3 atop the right section of the second panel // partially pointed octofoil, Hijri year 1040 upper right of the reverse, outside the center), mount removed (only noticeable close to the rim on both sides), VF, RR." Shah Jahan is most remembered today for having built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife. Twenty-five mints struck mohurs for him but Akbarabad and Burhanpur are the only ones that struck this style. His successors after Aurangzeb (r. 1658-1707) were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specifications: 10.8-10.9 g, gold, this specimen 10.78 g.

Catalog reference: KM-256.2, Fr-795.
