This specimen was lot 2589 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR rupee, Tatta, AH1041 year 4, month of Mihr, without any testmarks, bold XF." Shah Jahan is most remembered today for having built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife. His successors after Aurangzeb (r. 1658-1707) were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century. Tatta struck this style years 1-33.
Recorded mintage: unknown but the most common mint.
