Sincona sale 77, lot 2451

This specimen was lot 2451 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 40,000 CHF (about US$48,552 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"INDIA | Mughal Empire. Shihab al-Din Muhammad Shah Jahan, 1037-1068 H. (1628-1658). Mohur 1039 H.Year 2, Akbarabad. Sehr selten. NGC MS63. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Very rare, Magnificent condition.)"

This type, with the inscription inside a circle, is shown in Friedberg but not in the SCWC. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare mint.

Specification: 10.8-11.0 g, gold, this specimen 10.91 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-798; KM unlisted.
