Steve Album sale 51, lot 652

This specimen was lot 652 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $5,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR square rupee, Akbarabad, year 2, special issue, produced at Akbarabad and Lahore only in AH1038; one of the rarest of all silver coins of Shah Jahan; 2 small testmarks; of the highest rarity and almost never offered for sale! VF, RRR. Although originally published by Whitehead in 1926, KM was never able to acquire an illustration for their catalogs." The emperor Shah Jahan is today remembered for erecting the Taj Mahal for his wife.
