This issue, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, is from a type issued 1950-51 in fairly large numbers. It accompanied an escudo, also struck in nickel-bronze. In the 1960's, nationalists in Mozambique began their agitation for independence, triggering a multifactional war that continued after the Portuguese withdrew in 1975.

Recorded mintage: 16,000,000.
