This issue, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, is from a type issued 1952, 1955 and 1960 in fairly large numbers. It is accompanied by a bronze fifty centavos, escudo and copper-nickel 2½ escudos and silver five and ten escudos. In the 1960's, nationalists in Mozambique began their agitation for independence, triggering a multifactional war that continued after the Portuguese withdrew in 1975.
