Milan 1800 30 soldi
The first specimen was lot 1460 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $764. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Milan. 30 Soldi, 1800. NGC MS-63. Franz II (1792-1800). Toned. From the Demarete Collection." The second specimen was lot 25290 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "Milan. Franz II 30 Soldi 1800, MS63 NGC. Extremely attractive with silvery patination and dreamy, opalescent undertones. Fully-struck, with virtually flawless surfaces, this is an absolutely spectacular mint-state example that lends itself to a higher grade." This scarce type was struck 1794-1800 for the Austrian emperor Francis II as duke of Milan. The duchy was conquered by Napoleon and was the capital of his puppet kingdom of Italy until his downfall in 1815, when it was restored to the Austrians. The duchy was amalgamated with the former republic of Venice to form the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.
