Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 1103

This specimen was lot 1103 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €140 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, MILAN, François II (1792-1797), AR 30 soldi, 1796. D/ T. l. à d. R/ Ecu couronné. Tache au droit. Traces d'ajustage au revers. Légèrement nettoyé. Très Beau. (Italy, duchy of Milan, Francis II, 1792-97, silver thirty soldi of 1796. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: crowned arms. Stain on obverse, traces of adjustment marks on the reverse, lightly cleaned, Very Fine.)"

This scarce type was struck 1794-1800 for the Austrian emperor Francis II as duke of Milan. The duchy was conquered by Napoleon and was the capital of his puppet kingdom of Italy until his downfall in 1815, when it was restored to the Austrians. The duchy was amalgamated with the former republic of Venice to form the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.
