The Cisalpine Republic, centered on the old duchy of Milan, was one of the ephemeral states set up by Napoleon during his invasion of Italy in 1797. It collapsed upon the arrival of an Austrian army in 1800. Later, Napoleon assembled it and other parts of northern Italy into his kingdom of Italy, which lasted until his downfall in 1814.
