This type was struck 1983 only and superseded a copper-nickel fifty centavos with the head of Cuauhtémoc (KM 452). The stress of inflation in the 1980's as Mexico squandered her oil bonanza caused many coin types to come and go. This one honors the Palenques, an Indian culture which preceded the Mayas and the Aztecs. It is the last of the denomination.
Recorded mintage: 99,540,000 plus a few proofs.
