This specimen was lot 21523 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 4 Escudos 1794/3-FM, XF40 NGC, light original patina, a portion of the underlying 3 is visible at the upper right of the 4 in the date. Very scarce denomination. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." This type was struck 1792-1808 and is the most available of Mexican colonial four escudos but, like the smaller two escudos, remains scarce. Assayer FM is noted for the years 1784-1801.
