This specimen is one of a series minted 1773-89 in Mexico City during the reign of Charles III. The date is common, tho a very rare error exists with the obverse legend spelled "DEI GRTIA." Assayer FF is recorded for 1778-86. The Mexico City mint, opened in 1538, is still in operation. The second specimen was lot 2901 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO: Carlos III, 1759-1788, AR 2 reales, 1784-Mo, KM-88.2, assayer FF, deeply toned, with dramatic legend error 'GRTIA', Good, RR."

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11638, KM 88.2. The "GRTIA" variety is Cayón-11639.
