Shown is an 1774MoFM 8 reales of Charles III, one of a type struck 1773-84. It was lot 7364 in Ponterio sale 153 (Baltimore, March 2010), where it sold for $172.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1774-FM. Slightly weak strike, lightly cleaned. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." Assayer FM is recorded for the years 1770-78. The dollar that George Washington allegedly threw over the Potomac could have been of this type. Harris[1] notes that the Mexico City 8 reales is by far the most abundant coin of Charles III. The next most common issue, the two reales from Mexico City, is less than half as common.
