Mexico 1698-MXo L 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 7 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $8,925. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 2 escudos, 1698L, 'jeweled cross' variety, very rare, NGC AU details / counterstamp, CT Plate Coin. Very bold full 98 of date and oXML, nearly full shield and crown, also full cross with unidentified (rampant Dutch lion?) countermark on that side in a flat area of the periphery (therefore not affecting the details). NGC #4440719-002. Plate Coin on page 402 of Calico's Numismatica espanola (2008 edition). " All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type is listed for 1680-1701. Most specimens lack dates. Note the "MXo" mintmark used only on the gold of this period.
