Mexico 1680-Mo L 8 reales
This type was issued from Mexico City 1667-1701 during the reign of Charles II. The vast majority of survivors lack dates; dated specimens average six times the price of those without. The first specimen was lot 1249 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1680-MoL. Charles II (1665-1700). Recovered from the wreck of the Johanna. Oblong cob planchet with full date, mintmark and assayer. Mild surface corrosion. With certificate of authenticity." The second specimen was lot 4060 in the same sale, where it sold for $117.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1680-MoL. Charles II (1665-1700). Recovered from the wreck of the Johanna. Nice full date, faint but discernible mint and assayer marks. mild surface corrosion. With certificate of authenticity."
