This specimen was lot 57036 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, 1679-Mo L. Mexico City Mint. Charles II. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, Fine Details. Ex: Johanna Shipwreck (sunk off the South African coast on June 8, 1682)." This type was issued from Mexico City 1667-1701 during the reign of Charles II. The vast majority of survivors lack dates; dated specimens average six times the price of those without.
