Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71668
SB1122-71668r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71668 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1659/8-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, VF Details. This overdate is listed in Calico for the 8 Reales only; this issue thus may have been struck with an 8 Reales obverse die. This argent Cob shows a bold full date with a clear overdate on the final digit. Beside the date, the mintmark and assayer appears just as clearly. The reverse shows a nicely complete cross with a small chopmark on the upper left castle. The piece additionally shows some creases but is overall quite a charming example. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1634-65 with assayer "P". Unlike those of Bolivia, few of these early cobs have legible dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 12.87 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6166, KM-38; Cal-Type-275.
