Mexico 1627-Mo D real
This specimen was lot 72373 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob Real, 1627-Mo D. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Scrape, Fine Details. From the Richard August Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1622, 1627, 1630, 1643 and 1651-54 and notes 1618-31 with assayer "D". Some were surely made every year but almost none have legible dates, rendering them of little interest to collectors. This example realized over three times the catalog value and is the first Mexican coin dated 1627 we have posted.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 3.33 g.
