Mexico 1621-Mo D 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 765 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 1/2 real, 1621/0 D, two stars above and +fleur+ below monogram, unique. Attractively full crown and monogram with oM to left, part of D to right, two stars above, and +fleur+ below, also good full cross (albeit with old scrape), VF with toned fields, but most important numismatic feature is the fairly certain bottom of 1/0 of the date, which by style has to be 1621/0, the first such example we have seen." Cayón mentions only 1614-F and 1618/7-F for this type. Some were surely made every year but almost none have legible dates, rendering them of little interest to collectors. This is the first coin of Mexico dated 1621 we have posted to the Wiki.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.69 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1.73 grams.
