Metz 1640 thaler Dav-5583
This specimen was lot 2755 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$377 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH Metz, Stadt, Taler 1640, Metz. Gutes sehr schön. Leichte Prägeschwäche. (kingdom of France, city of Metz, thaler of 1640, Metz mint. Good Very Fine, Slightly weakly struck.)"
The bishop and city of Metz both issued coins but the town was under French occupation from the mid-1500's, which occupation was formally recognized by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This type was struck 1638-45 along with KM 25/Dav-5581, KM 26/Dav-5582 and KM 28/Dav-5583A.
