Metz 1647 thaler Dav-5583B
This specimen was lot 1284 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 170 CHF (about US$209 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH Metz, Stadt Taler 1647. Wappen in Sechspass. Rv. Büste St. Stephans halblinks. Kl. Schrötlingsr. Sehr schön. (France, city of Metz, thaler of 1647. Obverse: arms in six-petalled flower; reverse: half-length bust of St. Stephen; planchet cracks, very fine.)"
The bishop and city of Metz both issued coins but the town was under French occupation from the mid-1500's, which occupation was formally recognized by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.
