This specimen was lot 1120 in Goldberg Sale 139 (Los Angeles, June 2024), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Metz. Taler, 1638. Arms in fancy frame. Reverse: Bust of the Saint Stephen left. Toned. Pop 1; The Finest graded at NGC. NGC graded AU-53. Ex Goldberg Sale 44, Feb 12, 2008, lot 4326. The Peh Collection Part II." The bishop and city of Metz both issued coins but the town was under French occupation from the mid-1500's, which occupation was formally recognized by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This type was struck 1638-45 along with KM 25/Dav-5581, KM 26/Dav-5582 and KM 28/Dav-5583A.
