This specimen was lot 33432 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony. George VI Proof 1/4 Rupee 1951 PR64 PCGS. An especially fleeting colonial minor in Proof grades, featuring a captivating reverse awash with electric cotton candy toning." This type was struck 1950-51 and is common tho the proofs are rare. Smaller denominations had been minted as far back as the 1870's. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 2.95 g, copper-nickel, 19 mm diameter.
