This specimen was lot 1504 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS: George VI, 1937-1952, AR rupee, 1951, finest known grade (population 3), NGC graded MS66. Another example, also graded MS66 by NGC, sold at our Auction 21, Lot 1711, for $400." This type was struck 1950-51 and is common tho the proofs are rare. Smaller denominations had been minted as far back as the 1870's. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 11.7 g, copper-nickel, 29.8 mm diameter, security edge.
