Mauritius 1922 5 cents

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72178

This specimen was lot 72178 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 5 Cents, 1922. London Mint. PCGS MS-64 Brown Gold Shield. A pleasing example of the type with subtle, satiny luster and hints of mint red in the protected areas." This type was struck 1917, 1920-24 in modest numbers. It accompanied a bronze cent and two cents. Silver quarter, half and one rupees were struck for George V but not until 1934. The next issue of this denomination was in 1942.
