SA39-1808r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1808 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS: George V, 1910-1936, AE 2 cents, 1923, shimmering red luster, very scarce with full red color, one of only two coins with this designation by NGC and tied for the highest grade, NGC graded MS65 RD, S." This type was struck for the island 1911-12, 1917, 1920-24. It has a modest catalog value but likely much rarer in choice condition than the catalog indicates. Mauritius obtained her independence in 1968 but did not abandon the colonial coinage until the 1980's.

Recorded Mintage: 400,000.

Specification: bronze.

Catalog reference: KM-13.
