This specimen was lot 71165 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mainz. Siege Sol, 1793. Friedrich Karl Josef. NGC MS-61 Brown. Struck during the siege of Mainz which took place between 14 April to 23 July 1793. Perfectly centered with a touch of central weakness on both sides that prevents a finer grade." Soldiers of revolutionary France occupied Mainz in October 1792, causing the archbishop to flee. Coalition forces besieged and captured the city in July 1793 after a heavy bombardment. This type was accompanied by a five sols and two sols, also copied from French revolutionary coinage. The archbishopric was mediatized and partitioned in 1803; the part west of the Rhine had already been annexed to France.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper or brass.

Catalog reference: KM-601; Gad-65.
