Mainz 1793 5 sols
The first specimen was lot 42918 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mainz. 5 Sols, 1793. Friedrich Karl Josef (1774-1802). PCGS MS-63 RB Gold Shield. Struck during the siege of Mainz which took place between 14 April to 23 July 1793. An alliance between Prussia, Austria and German States besieged and captured Mainz from Revolutionary French forces. When negotiations failed the allied forces began bombarding the city on the night of 17 June. A spectacular example for the issue which was manufactured under extremely stressful conditions." The second specimen was lot 71163 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Mainz. Siege 5 Sols, 1793. Friedrich Karl Josef. NGC MS-61. Struck during the siege of Mainz which took place between 14 April to 23 July 1793. Obviously choice for the type with strong designs and the unusual appearance of luster that while subdued, presents around the designs." This type was accompanied by a sol and two sols, also copied from French revolutionary coinage. The archbishopric was mediatized and partitioned in 1803; the part west of the Rhine had already been annexed to France.
