Sincona sale 18, lot 1446

This specimen was lot 1446 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Konventionstaler 1794. Mainz. Gutes sehr schön-sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, convention thaler of 1794, very fine to good very fine.)"

Soldiers of revolutionary France occupied Mainz in October 1792, causing the archbishop to flee. Coalition forces besieged and captured the city in July 1793 after a heavy bombardment. This thaler and other issues of 1794-95 were likely struck to celebrate the departure of the French and to reward those involved in the relief of the city. The archbishopric was mediatized in 1803 and partitioned between France (which had annexed the western portion in 1795), Hesse-Darmstadt and Nassau.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.92 g.
