Mainz 1774 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 4816 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €320 (about US$414 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-1774. 1/4 Konv.-Taler 1774, Mainz, auf seinen Tod. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (archbishopric of Mainz, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, quarter convention thaler of 1774, Mainz mint, on his death. Small planchet defect on edge, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This issue was part of a series commemorating the death of archbishop Emerich Joseph in 1774. The auctioneers catalogued this as a quarter thaler but the weight marks this as a third thaler, which is how it is listed in the SCWC. It is scarce but not rare. No more coinage would be struck until the French revolution.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 9.35 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 8,55 g.
