Mainz 1506 goldgulden Fr-1631
This specimen was lot 3743 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,938 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ERZBISTUM Jakob von Liebenstein, 1504-1508. Goldgulden 1506, Mainz. GOLD. RR Sehr schön + . (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Jacob of Leibenstein, 1504-08, undated gold gulden, Mainz mint, rare, very fine or better.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This early dated type is listed for 1504-08.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
