Mainz (1634) 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 2555 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,199 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE STADT MAINZ. DIE SCHWEDISCHE BESETZUNG, 1631-1636. Ein Vierteltaler auf den Tod des schwedischen Königs Gustav II. Adolf in Lützen 1632. ¼ Riksdaler o. J. (1634), vermutlich Stockholm, auf seinen Tod in der Schlacht bei Lützen am 6. November 1632. Auswurfmünze zur Bestattung des Königs am 22. Juni 1634. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Spitzenkragen und umgelegter Schärpe//Tafel mit sechs Zeilen Schrift, umher Verzierungen. RR Hübsche Patina, kl. Kratzer im Feld der Vorderseite, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Frankfurter Münzhandlung 154, Frankfurt/Main 2020, Nr. 1233. Nach seinem Tod auf dem Schlachtfeld von Lützen am 6. November 1632 wurde der Leichnam Gustav II. Adolfs zunächst nach Weißenfels und im Frühling 1633 nach Wolgast vor der Insel Usedom gebracht. Im Juli 1633 überführte der schwedische Admiral Gyllenhjelm den Leichnam nach Schweden und landete am 8. August 1633 in Nyköping. Hier blieb der Körper bis zur Fertigstellung des Grabdenkmals in der Stockholmer Riddarholmskyrka. Das feierliche Begräbnis fand am 22. Juni 1634 statt. (Germany, city of Mainz, under Swedish occupation, 1631-36, an undated quarter thaler issued for the death of Gustavus Adolphus at Lutzen in 1632, probably Stockholm mint. Obverse: armored bust right with lace collar; reverse: tablet with six line inscription, arabesques around. Very rare, handsome patina, light scratches in the obverse field, very fine to extremely fine. After his death on the battlefield of Lützen on November 6, 1632, Gustav II Adolf's body was first brought to Weißenfels and in the spring of 1633 to Wolgast off the island of Usedom. In July 1633, the Swedish Admiral Gyllenhjelm transferred the body to Sweden and landed in Nyköping on August 8, 1633. The body remained here until the grave monument in Stockholm's Riddarholmskyrka was completed. The ceremonial burial took place on June 22, 1634.)"
We don't see this listed under Mainz, Erfurt or Sweden; it may actually a medal, one of many issued on this occasion.
