Mainz (1419) goldgulden Fr-1618
This specimen was lot 217 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Mainz, Erzbistum, Johann II. von Nassau, 1397-1419. Goldgulden o. J. (20.3.-23.9.1419), Höchst. Sehr schön. Kleiner Randfehler. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, John II of Nassau, 1397-1419, undated goldgulden, Hochst mint. Very fine, Minor edge nick.)"
Friedberg lists this type for the Bingen and Höchst mints. The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type comes without dates.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.25 g, gold, this specimen 3,48 g.
