Künker sale 352, lot 1967
Sincona sale 101, lot 2486. Note the small escutcheons on the obverse are reversed.

The first specimen was lot 1967 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €525 (about US$731 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Johann II. von Nassau, 1397-1419. Goldgulden o. J. (1414-1417), Höchst. GOLD. Sehr schön +. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, John II of Nassau, 1397-1419, undated goldgulden, Hochst mint. Very fine or better.)"

The second specimen was lot 2486 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$1,055 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Mainz, Erzbistum, Johann II. von Nassau, 1397-1419. Goldgulden o. J. (1414-1417), Bingen. Sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, John II of Nassau, 1397-1419, undated goldgulden, circa 1414-17, Bingen mint. Very Fine.)"

The archbishop issued several varieties of goldgulden during his reign, of which this one is common. The goldgulden was equal to the ducat in the fifteenth century but dropped in weight and purity in the sixteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, the first specimen 3.52 g, the second specimen 3.42 g.
