Künker sale 404, lot 2130

This specimen was lot 2130 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ADOLPH I. VON NASSAU, 1373-1390. Die Münzstätte Bingen. Goldgulden o. J. (1373-1374), ohne Angabe der Münzstätte (Bingen), mit Titel als Administrator und Bischof von Speyer. + ADOLF’ : EP’ : AMInISTT : EC : MO : Vierfeldiges Wappen (Speyer/Nassau) in Dreipass, in den Winkeln je ein Ringel//S [drei Ringe übereinander] WERTIn - VS [drei Ringe übereinander] AREPV’ St. Martin mit Heiligenschein und leicht schräg gehaltenem Krummstab thront v. v. in gotischem Gestühl mit Knospenkapitel, unten 9 Kugeln und zwei Dreiblätter. GOLD. Sehr seltene Variante. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Emporium 73, Hamburg 2015, Nr. 1612. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Adolph of Nassau, 1373-90, undated goldgulden, circa 1373-74, without Bingen mintmark, with his title as administrator and bishop of Speyer. Obverse: quartered arms of Speyer and Nassau in trilobe cantonned with annulets; reverse: nimbate St. Martin enthroned, holding a crozier under a Gothic dais, nine balls and two trefoils in the exergue. Very rare variety, cabinet example, extremely fine.)"

This is an early gold coin for this ecclesiastical state, which was a major issuer of goldgulden in the late Middle Ages. Adolf issued several goldgulden: Fr-1605 (St. Martin enthroned/arms in trilobe reverse), Fr-1605a (shown here), Fr-1606 (St. John obverse/four shields reverse), Fr-1607 (as -1606 but Udenheim mint), Fr-1608 (archbishop standing/arms reverse, Lorch mint), Fr-1609 (as -1608 but Oberlahnstein mint).
