Maccagno 1623 ducat Fr-503
This specimen was lot 1635 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALY | Maccagno, Giacomo III. Mandelli (1618-1645). Dukat 1623, Maccagno. Nachahmung eines holländischen Dukaten. VIRTVS VNITA FORTIOR EST Stehender Herrscher mit geschultertem Schwert zwischen geteilter Jahreszahl. Rv. MON ORD - IAC MAND - INF MAC - R C CO V I P Verzierte Schrifttafel. 3.38 g. Gianazza 31/1, Variante A. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Gewellt. Schrötlingsfehler. (Italy, lordship of Maccagno, Jacob III Mandelli, 1618-45, ducat of 1623, Maccagno mint, imitation of a Dutch ducat. Obverse: standing knight with sword on shoulder divides the date; reverse: ornate tablet. Very rare, Good very fine, Wavy flan, Flan flaw.)"
The county of Maccagno, on the east bank of Lago Maggiore, lies in the duchy of Milan. The count obtained the mint right in 1622 and proceeded to mint fifteen different gold coins in the next few years. All are rare today. No other ruler from that locale ever issued gold.
