Sincona Auction 103, lot 1419

This specimen was lot 1419 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$11,430 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Graubünden, Chur, Stadt, Beischlag zu einem Dukaten oder Zecchino 1622, Macagno. Geprägt in Italien, Macagno unter Giacomo III Mandelli (1618-1645). Der heilige Luzius zwischen der geteilten Jahreszahl. Umschrift: MON.NO.AVR.C.IA.CVR.REG. Rv. Doppelköpfiger, nimbierter Reichsadler mit Kreuz. Oben eine Krone. Umschrift: FER.II.IM.SEMP.AVGHVSTVS. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Schrötlingsriss. Exemplar der Auktion SINCONA 35, Zürich, Oktober 2016, Los 5232. (Switzerland, city of Chur, ducat or zecchino of 1622, Maccagno mint, struck by count Jacob III Mandelli (1618-45). Obverse: St. Lucius stands, dividing the date; reverse: nimbate double headed eagle with a cross between its heads, a crown above. Of the highest rarity, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Flan crack.)"

Maccagno, today a town of about 2000 people, lies on Lake Maggiore on the border with Switzerland. In the seventeenth century, it was part of the duchy of Milan. The count of Maccagno, Giacomo III Mandelli, obtained the mint right from emperor Ferdinand II in 1622 and struck ducatone (Dav-3925 and -3626) and a variety of very rare ducats (KM 11, 12, 17, 18 19, KM 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27 and 28).
