This specimen was lot 3530 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 750 (about US$988 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"40 Batzen (Neutaler) 1817. Vorzüglich. (canton of Luzern, forty batzen or new thaler of 1817, extremely fine.)"
The coinage of the canton of Luzern (sometimes spelled Lucerne) is not so common and this rare issue is no exception. Coinage ceased altogether in 1846 with an issue of five rappen. At this time, ten rappen = one batzen and ten batzen = one frank and four franken = one thaler.
Recorded mintage: 3,989.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.34 g.
