UBS sale 83, lot 2593

This specimen was lot 2593 in UBS sale 83 (Zürich, September 2009) where it sold for CHF 2900 (about US$3334 including buyer's fee). The catalog description noted,

"Neutaler zu 4 Franken 1816. Kabinettstück! FDC," (Appenzell new thaler of 4 franken, uncirculated with cabinet toning).

Appenzell, a small canton surrounded by the canton of St. Gall, struck coins until 1816. This rare type was accompanied by a half batzen and one batzen piece. The monetary system was 4 pfennig = 1 kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = 1 batzen, 10 batzen = 1 franken.

Recorded mintage: 1,650.
