Sincona sale 94, lot 3019

This specimen was lot 3019 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$451 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Batzen 1816, Bern. FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Appenzell, batzen of 1816, Bern mint. Uncirculated, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"

Appenzell, a small canton surrounded by the canton of St. Gall, struck coins until 1816. This rather scarce type was accompanied by a half batzen and had been struck previously in 1808. The monetary system was 4 pfennig = 1 kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = 1 batzen, 10 batzen = 1 franken.

Recorded mintage: 203 000.

Specification: 2.42 g, billon, 24 mm diameter, this specimen 2.66 g.
