Sincona sale 20, lot 3289

This specimen was lot 3289 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 550 (about US$689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Pfennig 1816. Fast FDC. (choice uncirculated.)" Appenzell, a small canton surrounded by the canton of St. Gall, struck coins until 1816. This scarce type was accompanied by a half batzen and one batzen piece. The monetary system was 4 pfennig = one kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = one batzen, 10 batzen = one franken.

Recorded mintage: 66,000.
