Sincona sale 87, lot 4117

This specimen was lot 4117 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Luzern, 4 Franken (Neutaler) 1814, Luzern. Dreiblättriger Laubrand. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, four franken or new thaler of 1814, Luzern mint. About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

The coinage of the canton of Luzern (sometimes spelled Lucerne) is not so common and this rare issue of 1813-14 is no exception. Coinage ceased altogether in 1846 with an issue of 5 rappen. At this time, 10 rappen = 1 batzen and 10 batzen = 1 frank and 4 franken = 1 thaler.

Recorded mintage: 44,000.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.33 g.
