Luzern 1741-IT 3 ducats Fr-321
This specimen was lot 4321 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 15,000 CHF (about US$20,790 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Luzern, Stadt und Kanton, 3 Dukaten 1741, Luzern. Gekröntes und geschweiftes Luzernerwappen, gehalten von zwei wilden Männern. Unten ein Engelskopf und Verzierungen. Rv. Vier Zeilen Schrift, darunter die Jahreszahl und I.T für den Stempelschneider Jonas Thiébaud, alles eingefasst in reichverzierter Kartusche. Schräg geriffelter Rand. Von grosser Seltenheit. Fast FDC. Leichte Prägeschwäche und kleiner Randfehler. Exemplar der Auktion Hess Divo 326, Zürich, Mai 2014, Los 290. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, triple ducat of 1741, Luzern mint. Obverse: crowned and curved Luzern arms, supported by two wild men, below, an angel's head and decorations. Reverse: Four line inscription, the date and initials of Jonas Thiébaud below, all framed in a richly decorated cartouche. Obliquely reeded edge. Of high rarity, About Mint State, Slightly weakly struck. Minor edge flaw.)"
This was one of a series of gold coins which included a single ducat (Fr-323), double ducat (Fr-322), four ducats (Fr-320) and five ducats (Fr-319).
