Lowenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg 1697-FS 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 4240 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LÖWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-VIRNEBURG, GRAFSCHAFT, Eucharius Kasimir, 1681-1698. 1/2 Reichstaler 1697, Wertheim. Stempel von Philipp Heinrich Müller, Augsburg. In der unteren Hälfte ein gespaltener Baum, der durch eine Klammer und eine Grafenkrone zusammengehalten wird und viele Früchte trägt, neben dem Baum zwei arbeitende Landleute, darüber ein Band mit der Aufschrift: ME CONIUNCTIO SERVAT; in der oberen Hälfte (in umgekehrter Stellung) ein von zwei von oben kommenden Armen gehaltener zerspaltener dürrer Baum, auf jedem Spaltstück eine Grafenkrone, darüber ein Band mit der Aufschrift: DUM SCINDITUR FRANGOR//Vierfach behelmtes, neunfeldiges Wappen, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl und die geteilte Signatur F - S (Münzmeister Friedrich Schattauer). Von großer Seltenheit. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (county of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg, Eucharius Kasimir, 1681-1698, half thaler of 1697, Wertheim mint. Obverse: In the lower half a split tree, which is held together by a bracket and a coronet and bears a lot of fruit, next to the tree two working farmers, above a ribbon with the inscription: ME CONIUNCTIO SERVAT ("it keeps me connected"); in the upper half (in an inverted position) a split dry tree held by two arms coming from above, on each split piece a coronet, above a band with the inscription: DUM SCINDITUR FRANGOR ("while the break is split"); reverse: Four-helmeted, manifold arms divides the date and the signature F - S. Extremely rare, rim defect, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This is the only half thaler of the seventeenth century from this insignificant locale wedged between Mainz and Wurzburg.
