Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort 1789-W 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 4273 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €160 (about US$210 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LÖWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-ROCHEFORT, GRAFSCHAFT, Konstantin, 1789-1806. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1789, Wertheim, auf seinen Regierungsantritt. Mit kleinerem Kopf. Kopf r.//Gekröntes, achtfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild Pfalz-Bayern, unten Ordensband mit Stern, darunter Münzstättenzeichen W Ü zwischen der geteilten Signatur E . - ST . (Münzmeister Johann Christoph Eberhardt und Münzwardein Carl Christoph Stockmar). Schrötlingsriß, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (county of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort, Constantine, 1789-1806, half convention thaler of 1789, Wertheim mint, on his accession, with small head. Obverse: head right; reverse: crowned eightfold arms with escutcheon of Pfalz-Bavaria, order ribbon with star around, initials below. Planchet crack, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Löwenstein-Wertheim was a county of the Holy Roman Empire, part of the Franconian Circle. It was formed from the counties of Löwenstein (based in the town of Löwenstein) and Wertheim (based in the town of Wertheim am Main) and from 1488 until 1806 ruled by the House of Löwenstein-Wertheim who are morganatic descendants (and the most senior line) of the Palatinate branch of the House of Wittelsbach. Löwenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg was the Protestant branch and Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort was the Catholic branch. They occasionally put aside their quarrels and issued joint coinage. This type was the last of the denomination.
