Wertheim in 1789

This specimen was lot 981 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,044 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÖWENSTEIN, LÖWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-ROCHEFORT, GRAFSCHAFT, Maximilian Karl, 1662-1718. Reichstaler 1697, Wertheim. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort, Maximilian Charles, 1662-1718, thaler of 1697, Wertheim mint. Rare, attractive example with handsome toning, minor edge defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is one of a few rare thalers of the seventeenth century from this insignificant locale wedged between Mainz and Wurzburg. In 1635, the county was partitioned between Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort and Lowenstein-Wertheim-Virneberg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
