Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32617

This specimen was lot 32617 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "LIVONIA. Swedish Occupation. Solidus, "59" (1659). Riga Mint. Karl X Gustav. PCGS MS-61." This specimen was offered again as lot 46962 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $105. This type was struck 1654-60 and has a low catalog value. This example was struck using mislaingned roller dies; part of a second reverse impression is visible. This denomination as issued for queen Christina (KM 21) is quite a bit more available. Riga and Livonia were seized by Sweden from Poland in 1621 and retained by them until their loss to Russia in 1721.
