Sincona sale 38, lot 1529

This specimen was lot 1529 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,679 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Repubblica Liguria, 1798-1805 96 Lire 1804. Sehr schön. (Ligurian republic, 1798-1805, 96 lire of 1804, Very fine.)"

This rare type is listed for 1798 and 1801-05. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered her independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy. Most of the issues of the Ligurian Republic are rare to very rare.
