Ligurian Republic 1803 96 lire
This specimen was lot 32169 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Genoa. Ligurian Republic. 96 Lire, 1803. Genoa Mint. NGC AU-58. An impressive nearly-Mint State hefty gold issue, this alluring example offers limited signs of handling with a bright goldenrod allure. A piece that will doubtless command the attention of many." This rare type is listed for 1798 and 1801-05. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered her independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy. Most of the issues of the Ligurian Republic are rare to very rare.
