Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 42450

This specimen was lot 42450 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "KOREA. 1/2 Chon, Year 10 (1906). Kojong (as Emperor). PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. Ex: Joe Sedillot Collection." This type, roughly equal to a half cent, was struck in 1906 in the last years of Korean independence before annexation by Japan. The next issue (KM 1136) was reduced in weight. Korea would not recover her independence until 1945 and even then in a divided state.

Recorded mintage: 24,000,000.
